It’s the big question. I’ve had the opportunity to work with all three of these Content Management Systems (CMS) in various guises, and in my view – from a online publishing perspective – there is a clear winner. Everyone has their favourite and there will no doubt people that vehemently disagree, but hear me out.
First on to Joomla and Drupal: Both Joomla and Drupal are complex CMSes, and I’ve felt that these are CMSes designed by techies for techies. When using these CMSes, you get the feeling that the publishing part of the CMS was priority 2 as opposed to its core function which is ultimately to get content onto the web. I’ve also found that the user interfaces and menu structures of these sites are clunky, busy and overly complex. (Admittedly I’ve only worked with earlier versions of Drupal.) Only use these CMSes if you have a good technical team and are happy to delve into the bowels of the thing every now and again.
Then there is WordPress. For a while, I’d never considered WordPress to be a CMS for a publishing site, as I’d always seen it as a blog-specialist platform primarily. But this doesn’t hold true anymore, and in fact WordPress can be a generalist CMS in itself, with the added blog functionality (such as trackbacks, pingbacks etc etc). In fact WordPress can be themed to work for a fairly complex magazine site or even a news site. It’s a new wave of using WordPress that has only really recently started to take off.
Wordpress is more of a blog application while Joomla is an advanced content management system. WordPress leap frogs over Joomla in terms of simplicity. It is user friendly from both the developer’s as well as the user’s point of view. The application is easy to learn so if you have little time at hand and all you need is a simple platform to post your content WordPress is the application for you.
Joomla is on the other hand slightly more complicated, but then it has a lot more features and add-ons with far advanced functionality. If your website design needs to have a lot of elements besides just content, Joomla is the better option. Its advanced features are more suitable to make customized websites as it has provisions to cater to every industry and market. However you need to spend a little more time to learn it.
Search Engine OptimizationWordpress is by default SEO friendly. It comes with several built in tools, like the ability to use .htaccess creating seemingly static URL called permalinks, blogrolling and pinging.

There really is not one clear winner when it comes to selecting an open source CMS. Each of these systems has its own strengths and weaknesses. It is more important to select the best CMS for the type of web site being built and to select the CMS with which you, as a developer, are most comfortable working. I personally prefer WordPress and use it the most. However, this also reflects that many of my clients are small companies that want to build a community around regularly published content. For a different class of clients and needs, I would likely use a different tool. Which CMS do you prefer?
First of all, there is no need to compare Drupal with Joomla. There is a heaven of differences between them. Drupal is advanced tool for developers and pros and should not be compared with Joomla which fails at such important points as CCK, advanced image handling, theming flexibility, content types + filtering and displaying them, scalability, security, integrity, QUALITY and INTELLIGENCE of contributed modules NOT QUANTITY (as in Joomla case). .
